to Reflex

How I develop my students' fluency

Think about the last time you learned to ride a bike, swim, or drive a car. At some point, someone explained the steps — how to balance and pedal, kick and breathe, steer and brake. But knowing the steps wasn't the same as doing them. The moment you could actually ride, swim, or drive was the moment you stopped thinking about the steps at all.

Language works the same way. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman describes two modes of thinking (Kahneman, 2011): System 2, slow and effortful, the part of your brain working out a grammar rule step by step; and System 1, fast and automatic, the part that lets a native speaker talk without thinking about grammar at all. Knowing grammar rules by heart isn't enough on its own — fluency happens once that knowledge moves from System 2 into System 1.

That shift — from conscious effort to automatic reflex — is the foundation of how I teach, broken into three steps.

Understand

Before a language structure can become automatic, it first has to be understood — which means practicing it enough to consolidate how the rule works. That's why every new structure starts with slow, controlled practice: clear examples and guided repetition, to calmly figure out what goes where and why. Only once a student feels confident with the rule do we move on.

Build the reflex

Once a rule is solid, it has to be practiced until it requires no conscious effort. This is the shift described by Robert DeKeyser's Skill Acquisition Theory: deliberate, rule-based knowledge gradually becomes faster and more automatic through repeated use (DeKeyser, 2015). This is the step many lessons skip — the jump from knowing a rule to using it without thinking. Closing that gap is exactly what my lessons and materials are built around.

Games like timed card races, relay races, and card flips are one way of making that practice intensive. When you're competing with a partner or trying to beat your own last score, you have to produce the language quickly rather than stopping to work through the rule each time. The more you retrieve and use it, the less effort it takes. Do that enough times, and “I know the rule” turns into “I don't have to think about the rule anymore.”

Speak freely

The final step is putting that automatic knowledge to work in real conversation. Merrill Swain's Output Hypothesis (Swain, 1995) helps explain why: solving an actual communicative task — not simply producing a correct sentence — can reveal gaps between what a student wants to say and what they are currently able to say, gaps that passive understanding may never expose.

That's why every topic closes with real, spontaneous use — role plays, debates, guessing games, discussions. Not because it's fun, though it is, but because that's the moment a rule stops being something a student knows and becomes something they can use.

In the end, fluency comes down to automaticity — accessing what you know fast enough so that the language doesn't get in the way of communication. That's the goal of my lessons and materials — moving English from something students consciously think about to something they can simply use.
